We are in celebration mode at Chichen Adventure, our lovely mare SacBeh has given birth to her foal! This gorgeous little filly has brought us all joy this spring and we wanted to ensure she had a fitting name. With our contest on the Chichen Adventure Facebook page, we were THRILLED to receive all your suggestions for names and we are proud to announce that she has officially been dubbed “Ixchel”, thanks and congrats to Juanma May!
The name Ixchel is very special to the Maya people, she is the goddess of the moon, water, healing and fertility and is revered throughout the Maya zone, even in today’s modern times. There are temples to Ixchel on the islands of Isla Mujeres and Cozumel and evidence of thousands of years of pilgrimages from as far away as the states of Tabasco and Campeche to honor this deity. She is also known as “Lady Rainbow”, as a goddess of water and divination, the rainbow is a perfect representation of Ixchel and when the Maya see a rainbow they believe they are invoking her wisdom and traveling through a gateway to the divine.
Horses play an important role in the history of Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula. After Cortez landed in Mexico with 16 horses, the Spanish conquistadors brought many more from Europe in the 1500’s, helping them to defeat and conquer the indigenous Mexican people like the Maya. The arrival of horses to Mexico changed everything for the nation, war, agriculture, architecture and building, communications, travel and arts and entertainment. Today the horse is still a vital part of the daily life for many!
If you are looking to go horseback riding in the Yucatan, we invite you to join us at Chichen Adventure! Meet our new baby Ixchel and her mom SacBeh and enjoy a peaceful horseback ride near Chichen Itza! Riding in the jungle with only the sounds of hoofbeats, your heartbeat and birdsong, it’s the perfect way to immerse yourself in nature and connect with the earth.
